photo : rockleThe school holidays have just started in Victoria and its a great time for families to spend some time together. Are you planning on a car trip this school holidays? If so, motion sickness can be quite common in kids and here are a few travel tips to avoid "accidents" inside the car:
- Check with your doctor before your trip on which medication is best for your child. Most medications are required to be taken even before the journey begins.
- Watch out for early signs during the journey - are they a bit sweaty, pale, dizzy or feeling nauseous?
- Stop for some fresh air or if you can't do that, wind down the window.
- Rather than focusing on something inside the car, try playing "I spy" which will get them looking around outside. This will help them feel a bit better.
- Limit your child from reading books or playing their hand held games. Try listening to a story or music CDs instead and encourage them to look outside whilst listening.
- Avoid putting children with motion sickness in the back of minivans or station wagons - they tend to feel this more in the rear seats.
- Dry crackers and easy to digest food will help settle their tummies. Remember, that an empty tummy doesn't help motion sickness.
- Also make sure you don't have any strong smelling food in the car.
- Bring some towels to put over them if they are feeling a bit nauseous. This might save their clothes and possibly your car interior!
- Pack a change of clothes and keep it in easy reach.
- Plastic bags are a must for sealing soiled clothes.
- Large containers are also a must! Kids can hold onto them whilst you're driving ... just in case! Old ice cream tubs are perfect.
I hope these motion sickness tips will help you get through your long car trip this school holidays.
Happy travels!

I suffered quite badly from motion sickness when I was a child and have been waiting to see if it appears in any of my children. Thankfully it has not arisen yet!
However I do find if they are too hot in the car and the sun is shining on them directly they will start to complain about feeling unwell. Planning to eliminate those to things before the journey is important.
Gosh you have some great tips Laine!
We haven't had any big roadtrips yet but I'll be reading back for certain when we do!
