Travel Tip Tuesday - Car Games

Photo : DaisyMaisy2002
Travelling in a car for hours with children can sometimes be a bit painful for all involved! But it doesn't have to be that way ... having games to play often passes the time quickly and it makes the start of your trip a fun one! Here are a few of our favourite games ...

1) Funny word Game
Pick a category e.g. animals, countries, names, etc. The first person says a word, the next person must say a word with the last letter of the previous person's word. For example in the "animal' category, Johnny says "donkey", Abbie then says "yak", Chris might say "kangaroo" and so on. No one word can be repeated and if it does, the person is out of the game. The person left is the winner.

2) Sticker Playscenes

These sticker playscenes are great to keep the kids amused. Groover loves his Knights and Castle playscene, as he enjoys having battles in his stories. Its perfect for when he's a bit tired and wants to chill out a bit in the car!
3) Licence Plate Game
This is an oldy but a goody! Make a sentence with the first 3 letters of the licence plate e.g. ULT - Unicorns Love Tickles ... who can make the funniest sentence?
4) Sounds like ...
Each person takes a turn and makes a noise, everyone else has to guess what is. It can be anything from what a cat sounds like, to the sound of what a coffee machines make.

5) Story with a twist ...
Each person takes a turn to tell a sentence of a story. For example - Groover will start with "Once upon a time, there was purple pig who lived on a farm", Mummy will then add "he loves eating big, giant, squishy grapes and one day whilst he was eating his dinner..." and Daddy will continue "he heard a loud crashing sound from the bushes " and so on. Groover loves this game as he loves using his imagination and the story can get a little silly which is all part of the fun!

6) Spot it Travel ...
This Spot it Travel Game is something we leave in the car. Groover enjoys playing this ... on the way to the shops or on our long trips to the coast. Its been a gem and has kept him occupied. Sometimes, he's the Spot it Travel "master" and shouts out something we all have to look for and the first one to spot it, is the winner.
What are your favourite car games to keep the kids (and yourselves) amused?

We just did the long car trip home yesterday. Printed out word finds, cross words worked well with my older ones and the younger one enjoyed mazes and colouring in.

Now why didn't you post this BEFORE I went on holidays and had three children in the car for a 12 hour trip each way!!!?

Excellent info that I will have to file away for the next jaunt!

Great game for the kids to play on long trips.

We bought an activity book for each child, and in the back of one it has fantastic travelling ideas. One is to give set things an animal and look out for them, then call out the animal when you see him. ie Every bearded man might be a gorilla, every convertible a different animal, and so on.

I am going on a 5 hr trip tomorrow and a I have a child who gets car sick if they play their DS, watch a movie, read, draw oranything that he has to put his head down for. On previous trips Celebrity heads with stickers was th best (who am I? person place or thing),but there has to be more games that dont need writing or something.
